Why Indian Students are going abroad for MBBS?

In 2023, the number of total MBBS seats in India is around one lakh and the number of MBBS aspirants NEET-UG applicants is around 20 lakh. That is a seat-to-applicant ratio of 1:20 which means that for each seat, 20 students are fighting for it.

The number mentioned above is the total number of seats, including private and public seats. Sadly, most of us cannot afford private seats in India so we look for government-sponsored seats which are around 50 thousand which makes it even harder for us to get a seat.

The high fees of private seats are not the only reason that encourages students to study abroad, for the same expense to study in India you can study at better universities with better education and have a higher quality of life abroad.

The other reason that students go abroad is the intense competition, it’s not the fault of the students that they cannot secure an MBBS seat. It’s the sheer demand-supply gap for MBBS seats that renders securing a seat challenging.

Eligibility for MBBS abroad

  • Qualify for NEET Exam
  • Should have Studied Biology in Higher Secondary

Pros & Cons of studying MBBS in abroad

Pros:
  1. Research oriented Education
  2. Comparatively Low Living Expense and Tuition Fees
  3. No Need of Licensing Exam to get Medical Registration after Studies
  4. High Regard for Indians
Cons:
  1. FMGE Exam
  2. Clinical Exposures

Important things to check while choosing a University

Several factors account for when we are selecting a university:

1. NMC Validation

The NMC(National Medical Council) has given some guidelines on what universities to go to and what prerequisites to do if you want to come back to India to work in the future after your studies.

2. Budget

There are good universities that we can study where the overall cost including fees and living expenses for the entire duration starts from 25 lakhs to 60+ lakhs. It’s better to select the university according to our budget. Check your budget now.

3. Accreditations

After MBBS, it is always good to have different options open to us whether it is to come back to India or to go to some other countries. So it would be better to choose universities that have ECFMG accreditations for working in the UK or WFME accreditation to work in the USA. It is also good to choose universities that are on the WHO List

4. Clinical Exposure

Strong clinical exposure is very important when we are looking for a university as it can increase our experience with real-life medical situations and learn how to handle them properly.

5. FMGE Pass Percentage

FMGE(Foreign Medical Graduation Examination) is the exam that we have to write and have to pass to practice medicine in India. So it is better to go to universities that have good FMGE Pass Percentage if we want to come back to India in the future.
